Gentlier Needling

Updated: Aug 15, 2023

Microneedling has been around for a while now. This procedure is a method of stamping or rolling very fine sterilized needles over the skin to the extent that the skin perceives it as an injury and thus goes into a healing repair mode. The small wounds cause your body to make more collagen and elastin, which heal your skin and help you look younger. You might also hear it called collagen induction therapy or microchanneling.

When stem cells react by releasing growth factors it encourages your body to break down damaged tissue and produce new cells. With added stem cell boosters (like Stem Stem) you will get even greater results. That's because growth factors provide the necessary molecules needed to activate resident fibroblasts to go into motion creating new collagen and elastin. Resident fibroblasts are the ones you want to stimulate because they produce the right type of collagen that makes skin look smooth and youthful. With the combination of regular microchanneling treatments and stem cell derived growth factors you can expect your uneven pigmentation to soften and wrinkles to diminish. Your skin will become smoother and stronger and more youthful looking.

Skin conditions like wrinkles, sagging, acne scars, uneven pigmentation and enlarged pores are some of the most common cosmetic problems faced by clients. But fortunately, there is an easy and minimally invasive treatment available which can help you get your glowing, healthy skin back. Although microneedling is a great option that is suitable for a wide range of clients it may not be ideal for older clients with thinner or sensitive skin. Some swelling, redness, or sensitivity right after treatment is normal and should fade within a few days. Light bleeding during the procedure is also normal when doing medical needling depths. However, microneedling still has some associated risks. In rare instances, some patients may experience infection and even scaring. One can also experience a reaction to the anesthetic used to numb the face.

We did a lot of microneedling (microchanneling) at our spa in Wellesley. It was very beneficial when clients committed to a treatment once a month for at least six months. I have to say though, that even with numbing the face this treatment could be quite uncomfortable, especially at higher depth needles (.5 mm and above). Because of the small risks listed above (and the pain) I found myself recommending it less and less to clients. Or, sending them to a physician for more invasive needling and to be treated appropriately if a problem occurs. Microneedling often costs anywhere from $300 to $700 per session. Although the number of sessions may vary, most people need six sessions for optimal results. With this in mind, you may spend anywhere from $1800 to $4,200 overall (for 6 treatments).

The current thought is that you don't really need to go to those deep depths to experience great anti-aging results. Here are some benefits of cosmetic microneedling:

  • Releases growth factors which boost the production of collagen & elastin.

  • Thickens the epidermis which reduces lines and wrinkles.

  • Helps soften even uneven pigmentation.

  • Increases product penetration from 10% to about of 80% after needling.

  • Helps reboot cell to cell communication to normalize skin function.

Dr Lance Setterfield is one of the leading authorities on microneedling. Dr. Setterfield has shown that “less is best.” As noted in his authoritative text, The "Concise Guide to Dermal Needling", Dr. Setterfield found cosmetic microneedling at 0.3 mm to be as effective in reducing wrinkles as medical microneedling when used regularly with appropriate active ingredients. Others noted that targeting the dermal/epidermal junction seems to be the “sweet spot” for stimulating elastin production. The dermal/epidermal junction lies around 0.6mm deep, making it well disposed to a cosmetic needling treatment at that depth. Here is a quote from Dr Setterfield:
