How Your Sunscreen Works

NEW!!
Sunscreen is your #1 anti-aging product.
It protects the skin from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun
by absorbing or reflecting these rays.
Physical Blockers (Reflectors):
These ingredients, such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, form a physical barrier on the skin that reflects and scatters UV rays away from the face. You'll find these ingredients in our Gentle Screen.
Chemical Sunscreens (Absorbers):
These ingredients, such as oxybenzone and avobenzone, absorb UV rays and convert them into heat, which is then released from the body. These sunscreens include Brightening Day Protection. It goes on smooth and silky and acts as great moisturizer as well.
I suggest Physical Sunscreen for sensitive skin types because there is no heat created in the process of protecting your skin. Sensitive skin types that get red easily may prefer an SPF of 30 as it is less irritating than the higher SPFs. Physical sunscreen's are also non-comedogenic, which is good for acne prone skin.
There are some physical sunscreens that have a tint added to them to reduce the white cast usually associated with a physical screen. This is helpful for darker skin types. Make sure yours melts easily into the skin. Our Mineral Tinted SPF 30 is a perfect example.
Chemical Sunscreens (SPF 50) are sunscreens that may be preferred for their lightweight texture, easy application, and non-greasy finish, while physical sunscreens use minerals to block UV rays, potentially leaving a white cast. Many chemical sunscreens have better moisturizing, brightening and antioxidant benefits.
Using the right amount of sunscreen is just as important as selecting the correct SPF. Most people apply far less sunscreen than necessary, which can lessen its protective effects. When it comes to applying sunscreen on your face, the recommended amount is around 1⁄4 teaspoon. In a sun situation reapply frequently.
Sunscreen Boosters
For increased sun protection apply a foundation or primer over your sunscreen, one that that includes additional SPF. The amount of primer or foundation typically applied is not enough to replace your sunscreen - however it does provide an extra boost to SPF that enhances your sunscreen's efficacy.
